The tale of Disney’s The Lion King starts in a vast savanna territory in Africa; set in The Pride Lands, the teenage lion Simba is destined to succeed as King, before tragedy strikes because of the deeds of his evil uncle Scar and his impulse to take the throne and become King himself. The first act's series of events leads to Simba's banishment from The Pride Lands and the tale of his ultimate journey back to retake his throne and his place as King.

The musical, since its formation, had to maintain accuracy using real-life sources from real African society and history given the show's setting. The narrative itself is actually founded on previously existing African leaders and factual events – Simba as an example is the animal version of Sundiata Mansa, the Emperor of the Imperial Mali who was justly called The Lion of Mali.

Julie Taymor, the first woman in the history of Broadway to gain a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, paid due homage to the original film as source material, especially costume design, which resulted in an accurate staging of The Lion King. The outfits alone are gracious portrayals of several ethnic groups in Africa, a portrayal of which is Simba’s garb in the play which as it happens based on Kenyan Maasi fighters' armor. Just like the late 1994 motion picture, the fantastic musical score created by Elton John and Tim Rice stays true to its African heritage, with the stage adaptation even including songs with lyrics that are sung either in part or completely in African tongue like Swahili and Zulu. Additionally, the African motif is also clearly seen in dance numbers, with several of the performances showing off the seamlessness of Bali-inspired dance.

The costume design, song composition, and stellar performances all blend together so well to deliver an magnificent musical.
