With the guidance of Baz Luhrmann, the creator of the previous motion picture produced in 2001, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a Broadway version of the said picture. Also following the tale of Christian and Satine and their forbidden affair, the musical is produced with a beautifully decorated stage accurate for its late 1900s setting, while updating its song arrangements to not only include the original music from Baz Luhrmann's film, but also new arrangements of current pop songs that were not available when the original picture was produced.

In the first stages of its conception, Moulin Rouge! The Musical needed to meet high expectations of exceeding or at minimum being at equal footing with the previous movie of the same name. The musical's current success tells us that Moulin Rouge! The Musical has become one of Broadway's treasures with repeated standing ovations from both fans and critics alike. Broadway World’s Miranda Keating even appreciated the show after viewing, stating “Truthfully, as as I entered the theatre, I was instantly transported into the beauty of what was designed as 19th century Paris. When the production ended, I originally had no words. I was blown away by the whole musical.” The Broadway hit continues its runs to date, now available in Edmonton and to be produced at Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on Saturday 17th January 2026, Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium renowned for being one of the country's premier show venues with a beautiful stage, acoustics, and design both in and out of the venue.
The play's storyline itself is a rollercoaster with extreme emotion focused on Christian and Satine, an American writer moves to Paris to find out his dream and path in life, and a performer in the Moulin Rouge nightclub, respectively. The two lovers begin a secret affair as they become more acquainted with each other, and it is in their affair that they go back and forth as they try to unsuccessfully stop themselves, though their love for each other pushes them on.
In the duration of 2 hours and 45 minutes of the full play, this show is shared largely through music, with epic arrangements from the creative team, which is a blend of mash-ups, medleys, and even songs from the 2001 film. Manchester Media Group was quoted that Moulin Rouge is “a musical full of life because of its brilliant cast and crew.” From the 19th century set to the modern pop numbers, the musical’s sparkle shines through; plus the fact that even the cast members are composed of singer superstars including Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo originating the title roles of Christian and Satine and you have a worldwide phenomenon on your hands.
