Moulin Rouge! The Musical is one more famed stage adaptation to further the number of world-class shows that have been shown in Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.
A story of difficult love between an unlikely pair, Moulin Rouge! The Musical recounts to us a tragic yet swoonworthy story in the equally intimate locale of Paris, France. At the center of Montmartre, Christian, a passionate writer who journeys in Paris with nothing but hope in his heart, encounters the most beautiful woman he has seen and club entertainer, Satine, in the renowned nightclub Moulin Rouge. Christian and Satine then struggle to keep their love alive against all odds, as another wealthy benefactor sets his eyes on Satine as his muse.
Created as an offshoot that was staged more than a decade after the original movie, this Broadway play's initial struggle was to take this known narrative and giving it a modern touch. The masterful approach of the crew, just like the previous film, was to present the tragic love story with alternate and fresh renditions of modern popular numbers. The next move was to expand the song list and truly turn it into a “jukebox musical with a difference”, as the creators refer to it. The outcome, as viewed on the Broadway stage, was a great combination of smashing medleys, mash-ups, and arrangements. Though the show keeps many of the late movie's beloved tracks including Lady Marmalade, the Broadway show now performs current songs from the current times including Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance, Beyonce’s Single Ladies, and Britney Spears’ Toxic among so many other pop songs.
