The Alberta Ballet presents The Sleeping Beauty at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on Saturday, November 4th, and viewers of all ages are welcome to catch the event!
Dedicated to professional performances, the Alberta Ballet announced their upcoming ‘23/’24 season that aims to “place creativity center stage” by releasing three full-length ballets and a double-bill. For four nights, the familiar story of Sleeping Beauty will be presented at the Jubilee Auditorium with a local spin as it features the magnificent landscapes and foliage of the Canadian Rockies.
Choreographer and associate artistic director Christopher Anderson shares his thoughts about this unique twist with the Edmonton Journal. “It’s a quintessential ballet, and this show is constructed and staged in a way that pays tribute to the great history of past productions,” he starts. “I’ve added some new choreographic elements, but there are also still a lot of the hallmark moments that you would expect from this ballet.”
Sleeping Beauty tells the story of Aurora, a princess who is cursed by a wicked fairy to sleep for a century and can only be saved by true love. Alberta Ballet’s version stays true to this plot while adding elements of Tchaikovsky’s iconic score and Marius Pepita’s original choreography to enhance the ballet experience.
“It is a pleasure to see a company put so much into understanding the ballet’s highly sophisticated movement language intricacies. Alberta Ballet showed, in the most intimate terms, exactly how The Sleeping Beauty can be a dazzling cross-section of everything international that was popular in Russian ballet at the end of the nineteenth century,” the Calgary Herald shares about the live performance.
The production would not be complete without the aid of the creative team behind each effect shown on-stage. See the full list of credits below:
